Hair Relaxer Cancer Risk by Product Type: What the Evidence Shows

Women who used chemical hair relaxers over the years often used multiple brands and formulas — from at-home kits to professional salon products, from lye-based to no-lye formulas. Understanding the chemical differences between product types is important for assessing risk and for building a strong legal claim.
Lye vs. No-Lye Relaxers: A Common Misunderstanding
One of the most persistent misconceptions in hair relaxer science is that "no-lye" relaxers are safer than lye-based products. This has been marketed aggressively to consumers for decades. The reality is more complicated.
Lye relaxers use sodium hydroxide as the active straightening agent — a strong alkaline chemical that breaks down the hair's disulfide bonds. No-lye formulas substitute other alkaline agents, most commonly guanidine hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, lithium hydroxide, or potassium hydroxide. What no-lye formulas typically retain — and sometimes contain in higher concentrations — are the phthalates, parabens, and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals that researchers have linked to hormonal disruption and cancer risk.
In other words, removing lye from the formula does not remove the ingredients researchers are most concerned about in the context of uterine cancer and fibroids.
Phthalates: The Key Chemical of Concern
Phthalates are a class of chemical plasticizers used in cosmetics and personal care products as fragrance carriers and to help products maintain a smooth, creamy texture. In hair relaxers, phthalates serve as conditioning agents and fragrance stabilizers. They are absorbed through the scalp during application.
Research has consistently found elevated phthalate metabolites in the urine of frequent hair relaxer users. Phthalates are well-established endocrine disruptors — they interfere with estrogen signaling, suppress testosterone, and have been linked in multiple studies to hormone-sensitive conditions including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and cancer in reproductive organs. Diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are among those most commonly detected in relaxer products.
Parabens: Preservatives With Estrogenic Activity
Parabens are widely used as preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products, including hair relaxers. Methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are among the most common. Research has shown that parabens exhibit weak estrogenic activity — they can bind to estrogen receptors and mimic estrogen's effects in tissue. In breast and uterine tissue, which is highly estrogen-sensitive, this activity may contribute to cell proliferation and tumor development.
The FDA has not restricted paraben use in cosmetics, but European regulators have tightened limits on certain paraben concentrations in leave-on personal care products. Many professional hair care brands marketed to Black women contain parabens in formulations that would not be permitted in European markets at their current concentrations.
Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
Some hair relaxer formulations contain preservatives that release formaldehyde over time as they break down — including DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and diazolidinyl urea. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the National Toxicology Program. Its presence in scalp-applied hair products raises separate concerns from the endocrine disruption pathway of phthalates and parabens.
Professional vs. At-Home Products
The distinction between professional-grade relaxers (applied in salons, typically by licensed cosmetologists) and at-home kits matters both scientifically and legally. Professional products are often more concentrated and designed for maximum effect. At-home users may leave products on longer than recommended because they lack professional training in timing, potentially increasing chemical absorption. Salon workers face occupational exposure across multiple clients per day, which represents a separate exposure pathway with its own legal implications.
For legal claims, the critical questions are which products you used, how frequently, and for how long — regardless of whether you applied them at home or had them professionally applied.
Which Products Are Named in MDL 3060
MDL 3060 specifically names products from major manufacturers including L'Oréal (Dark and Lovely, SoftSheen-Carson, Optimum), Strength of Nature (African Pride, Motions, Profectiv MegaGrowth), Namaste Laboratories (ORS Olive Oil products), and previously Revlon (Realistic, Creme of Nature). If you used products from these manufacturers and developed a qualifying condition, you may have a viable claim regardless of whether you used a lye or no-lye formula — the concern is the overall chemical formulation, not the lye content alone.
What Product Use History Looks Like in a Legal Claim
